Maryborough Little Athletics Centre kicked off its summer season last Friday night. It was delayed by a week due to the soaking rain and the condition of the oval, but the wet weather hadn't done anything to dampen the athletes enthusiasm with almost 60 athletes registered and ready to compete.
In the junior age groups the Rumpff family once again showed their strength in distance running, with Charlie (under 7 girls) winning her 300m event, and Samuel (under 9 boys) and Tamika (under 10 girls) winning their 400m events.
Under 6 athletes having their first taste of Little Athletics had two events on the night — a 70m run and long jump. Lila Clark narrowly beat Mayah Talbot in the 70m run, while Isla Lawry dominated in the long jump, with Lila and Mayah separated by just 3cm in second and third places.
In the senior age groups, Emmerson Wood (under 12 girls) make a strong statement in her return to Little Athletics with a win in the 400m event, closely followed by Theresa Buchanan and Finley Wagstaff. Rising star Cameron Aik (under 12 boys) won all five of his events, having clearly lost none of his speed and strength over the winter break.
Maryborough Little Athletics is held each Friday at the Jack Pascoe Reserve, behind the indoor sports centre on Gilles Street. Meet at 5:15pm for a 5:30pm start. Athletes from ages 5 to 15 are welcome. Please phone centre secretary Andrew Lighten on 0400 632 900 for more information.
